Paul Butler "What`s Within (lean)", 2007 mixed media 10.5" x 8" About the artist: To define Paul Butler’s artistic activity is to reduce the vista of freedom and flexibility that the artist creates through his various projects. Often recognized for his Collage Party events, Butler brings a similar simultaneity to performative projects such as Reverse Pedagogy, an ongoing venture that enables artists to question the context in which art is learned and taught by self-directing their own experimental residencies. It is collective activity that is being questioned here, a valuable investigation considering the collaborative nature of so many artists’ practices. The acts that Butler instigates are no less compelling than the wall-mounted work he creates. The collage series, What’s Within, transforms banal pages of magazines into layered passage ways, the overlapping portals of which are figures cut out of each page. The way each silhouette interacts with the one on the page above or below defines the mysterious and dynamic juxtapositions that make the series so enthralling.
